Severe Weather – Be Prepared

Severe weather can happen anytime, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,000 tornadoes
  • 2 land falling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather-related, leading to around 100’s of deaths per year and billions of dollars in damage. Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking a few actions and being an example to others are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know your risk.

The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action.

Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communication plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

Be an Example.

Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

Build an Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day)
  • Food (non-perishable 3-day supply)
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery operated radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Clothing
  • Dust masks or bandanas
  • Plastic sheeting, garbage bags and duct tape
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Hygiene items
  • Important documents; copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account information
  • Cash
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches in a waterproof container

Common Causes of Water Damage

Common Causes for Water Damage

Pressurized water supply lines are one of the leading reasons that a home may suffer a flood. Take time to inspect your supply lines and replace them if they appear cracked or show signs of deterioration. You could be saving yourself time and money, and your home from damage.

You can help prevent a flooding disaster by checking these key areas: refrigerator lines, washing machine hoses, and toilet water supply lines. These supply lines usually are easily accessible and can be changed with pliers or an adjustable wrench. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, or if you need assistance, a family member or local handyman could help you.

Let's focus on the toilet in your bathroom as a potential cause for water damage. Here are some of the most common reasons you may experience loss from a faulty toilet:

1-Leaking supply line is the line that connects the plumbing coming out of the floor to the toilet tank. This line is under continuous pressure, which means that if the hose begins to leak, it will continue to leak until the water line is turned off.

2-Old worn-out mechanical parts inside the tank can cause the toilet to run continuously and even overflow onto the floor, resulting in severe water damage to the floor, walls, and everything beneath.

3-The old worn-out wax ring that is at the base of the toilet where it connects to the floor. This wax ring can deteriorate out over time, causing water to leak at the base of the toilet.

4-Tank-to base washer is worn-out or pinched. If the tank is not seated correctly to the base, the washer could fail. Or, if the washer has aged too much, water can leak when flowing down to the bowl.

The water supply lines in a typical home or business are under and have continuous pressure, and if there's a leak or break, water will run out until it's shut off or fixed at the main water shut-off. Leaks inside walls are notorious for causing a lot of damage. These leaks are often unseen, slow, and gradual, so damage builds up and compounds itself over a period of time. To no fault of their own, homeowners don't see the problem until it's too late, and much damage has occurred.

We are water damage restoration specialist and are ready to restore your Lowndes County home or business to pre-water damage conditions. We quickly extract the water and then dry your property using state-of-the-art equipment. SERVPRO of Valdosta uses moisture monitoring equipment to effectively measure and document the drying process to ensure your property is dry.

The Importance of Immediate Restoration After a Fire

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire in your business is overwhelming and stressful. Getting production back on track, employees back to work and making decisions on rebuild are all priorities to any facility manager. Starting the fire restoration process should be immediate. For one, the sooner you start the sooner you can get your work life back to normal. The longer you wait the bigger the risk of long-term issues developing.

Start the Cleanup

While you are still going to need to contact a professional restoration company to clean up after a fire, there are a few things you can do on your own. Of course, make sure that it is safe to enter the facility before attempting any cleanup on your own. Even if it is safe, make sure to wear proper clothing, like gloves, long sleeve shirts, and a mask.

Caring for your belongings: After opening the windows, make sure to scrub what you can with soap and water. This includes counters, cabinets, tables, and other surfaces. After scrubbing down surfaces, you can start to wash clothes and anything else that can be machine-washed. Keep in mind, more delicate items should be sent to a dry cleaner, and anything you wash at home may need more than one cycle to get the odor out.

Protecting Your Garage During Storm Season

6/27/2022 (Permalink)

We are currently in the peak of storm season when tropical storms and hurricanes are popping up regularly.  But what if you don't live near the coast?  Is there still a threat during storm season?  The answer is YES!  In the south, with high temperatures and humidity, storms can be extremely dangerous.  When planning to protect your home one of the most vulnerable areas is your garage.  Your garage is susceptible to high winds and flooding.  Here are a few tips to storm-proof your garage:

  • When purchasing a garage door look for one with a high wind-resistance rating.  If a storm with very strong winds or a tornado comes through and your garage door is breached the winds can batter your home.  This can lead to water coming in and causing costly damage.  For areas prone to tornado's it is recommended that you invest in a garage door that can withstand 130 mph or higher winds.
  • When installing your garage door consider installing a bracing system.  This will reinforce the integrity of the door by anchoring the door to the walls and floors and into each hinge.
  • Make sure to do proper maintenance to your garage door.  Repair any breaches or holes that would allow wind to get through the garage door.  Also make sure to check the weather stripping and mechanisms for proper functionality.
  • Do you have windows in your garage?  Make sure they are secure and their weather stripping is in proper condition.  Having wrought-iron window protection also greatly helps in protecting the glass from flying debris.
  • Install flood vents and proper drainage.  You can have a trench drain installed to divert water, and flood vents inside the garage can drain water getting through before levels rise and cause damage.

At SERVPRO of Valdosta we believe in being prepared for any emergency.  We can handle any of your storm or water damage emergencies.  Call us at 229-244-1466

Smoke and soot facts:

Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.

Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Valdosta will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire.

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

According to the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) knowing what to do when you see a tornado, or when you hear a tornado warning, can help protect you and your family.

During a tornado, people face hazards from extremely high winds and risk being struck by flying and falling objects. After a tornado, the wreckage left behind poses additional injury risks. Although nothing can be done to prevent tornadoes, there are actions you can take for your health and safety.

In Your Home During a Tornado

The (NCEH) recommends that if you are at home during a tornado, pick a place in the home where family members can gather if a tornado is headed your way. One basic rule is AVOID WINDOWS. An exploding window can injure or kill.

The safest place in the home is the interior part of a basement. If there is no basement, go to an inside room, without windows, on the lowest floor. This could be a center hallway, bathroom, or closet.

In Your Car

The (NCEH) warns the least desirable place to be during a tornado is in a motor vehicle. Cars, buses, and trucks are easily tossed by tornado winds.

DO NOT TRY TO OUTRUN A TORNADO IN YOUR CAR. If you see a tornado, stop your vehicle. Do not get under your vehicle.

2/18/2022 (Permalink)

Mold growth is shown close up Call SERVPRO of Valdosta (229) 244-1466, to come in and perform an inspection as well as any necessary cleanup and removal.

If you have water damage in your Valdosta home or business don't wait, call trained professionals today. In many cases, secondary damage such as black mold can cause even more trouble than the primary damage.

The following are a few questions that you may want to know the answers to in order to keep avoid larger problems.

How Does a Leak Contribute to Mold Growth?

This question has a simple and easy answer. Leaks create a wet area in the building which results in the optimal environment for mold to grow. This fungus thrives in moisture and can spread very quickly under the right circumstances. When you have a roof leak, it can result in a growth forming in the ceiling and may require quite a bit of work to remove it completely.

How Long Does It Take to Spread?

Mold can spread quite quickly when provided with enough moisture. If you have a roof or ceiling leak, you could end up with a mold problem overnight. It takes as little as a day for this persistent fungus to start growing a colony and the longer it is left alone, the bigger the growth will become. Over time, it can spread to other areas of the building as well.

What Can You Do About It?

There are several steps you can take to prevent it from spreading, the first of which is to have repairs made as soon as you discover a leak or water damage. Keeping moisture levels low in the building by using a dehumidifier, vent or open windows can help as well.

Teaching Children Important Lessons About Surviving a House Fire

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

Teaching children about fire safety is important. It is important to have an escape plan and make sure your child understands what they should do. You should make sure they are familiar with the smoke detector.

They should understand what the sound is, and that it means leave and go to the place where you family will safely meet outside.

It might be helpful for your child to draw a map of your home and highlight their escape route. It's also a good idea to walk that route with them and ensure they know where to meet outside.
It is equally important to keep fire sources out of the reach of children.

Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances in a secured location out of your child’s reach. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that 300 people are killed and $280 million in property is destroyed each year as the result of children playing with fire.

A fire extinguisher is shown Fire extinguishers are important to have to protect your home from fire but are they enough?

The thought of a fire in your home isn't pleasant. There could be extensive damage, as well as injuries or worse. It's been reported that more than 2,500 people die in home fires each year. That's from research conducted by the National Fire Protection Association.

Fire extinguisher can catch a small fire early and are useful. A fire extinguisher may not be enough. Fire sprinklers in homes save lives and property. In the case of a fire in a home, the risk of dying decreases by about 80% when the home is equipped with a fire sprinkler system

The cost of a fire sprinkler system in a new home averages $1.35 per sprinklered square foot. That's according to a Fire Protection Research Foundation Study. It's worth checking with your insurance company, in some cases home fire sprinkler system can reduce the homeowner’s insurance premium. Smoke from things like burnt toast will not activate a fire sprinkler. Only the high temperature of a fire will activate the sprinkler.

Valdosta Plumbing Problems Can Be Prevented With A Few Simple Steps

A call center is shown with the words we're standing by and an orange SERVPRO logo If you do have water damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Valdosta (229) 244-1466.

Here are steps you can take to reduce the risk of plumbing problems:

Ensure your pipes are properly insulated. This is especially important if you live in an older home and in a colder climate.

Have your pipes inspected annually. A professional plumber can determine whether any pipes have damage or where a leak is likely to occur and repair a potential problem before it starts.

A plumber can also tell you whether your pipes need replacements. Many homes built from the late 1970s through the 1990s have polybutylene piping, which is known for being faulty and would likely need to be replaced.

Be careful what you flush. This simple step can avoid clogs in your plumbing system that could lead to costly sewage issues.

Invest in a water monitor. These devices attach to the pipes in your home and can alert you to changes in water pressure, which may signal a leak somewhere in the home. If caught early, leaks may be repaired easily.

If you do have water damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Valdosta (229) 244-1466.

There Are Things You Can Do To Plan In Case Of A Fire

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

Computer equipment is shown with a banner that has the words In Case Of Fire Is your family ready if there is a fire?

Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as one or two minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. This is according to the National Fire Protection Association. They also say, a closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.

Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors.

In addition to the tips above you should keep computer files backed up on an external hard drive or cloud in case of fire damage.

If you have fire damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Valdosta. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action. Water damage in and around your home can be costly. Early detection can help keep water damage to a minimum, especially if you can fix the issue before there is significant damage.

One way to determine if you have a leak is to check your water bills and your water meter. You could have a hidden leak if you notice a sudden unexplained cost increase in your monthly bills.

It's also a good idea to read your water meter. Don’t use any water for two hours. Read the meter again. If it has moved, you’ve just discovered you have a leak.

If a leak causes damage to your home call the restoration experts at SERVPRO of Valdosta.
SERVPRO of Valdosta professionals answer your calls 24/7/365 regardless of the cause, scale of loss, or size of facility.

Water leaks that aren't taken care of quickly can turn into a major problem. If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.

Those conditions include:

Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.

Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.

Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

Stay out of affected areas.

Turn off the HVAC system and fans.

Contact SERVPRO of Valdosta for mold remediation services (229) 244-1466.

What Not to Do:

Don’t touch or disturb the mold.

Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.

Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.

Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

A fallen tree is shown in a road SERVPRO of Valdosta is here to help (229) 244-1466.

According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorms are officially defined as storms that are capable of producing hail that is an inch or larger or wind gusts over 58 mph. Hail this size can damage property such as plants, roofs and vehicles.

Wind this strong is able to break off large branches, knock over trees or cause structural damage to trees. Some severe thunderstorms can produce hail larger than softballs or winds over 100 mph, so please pay attention to the weather so you know when severe storms are possible.

Thunderstorms also produce tornadoes and dangerous lightning; heavy rain can cause flash flooding.

What should you do when the lightning and thunder stops and it looks likes the severe thunderstorm is over?

Stay Informed: Continue listening to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay updated about severe thunderstorm watches and warnings. More severe thunderstorms could be headed your way.
Contact Your Family and Loved Ones: Let your family and close friends know that you're okay so they can help spread the word. Text messages or social media are more reliable forms of communication than phone calls.

Assess the Damage: After you are sure the severe weather threat has ended, check your property for damages. When walking through storm damage, wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy shoes. Contact local authorities if you see power lines down. Stay out of damaged buildings. Be aware of insurance scammers if your property has been damaged.

Hurricanes And Flooding, What You Can Do Ahead Of The Storm

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

According to The Federal Emergency Management Agency Flooding is the most common, and most expensive, natural disaster in the United States. Just 1 inch of water pooled in a single-story, 1,000 square-foot home can cause close to $11,000 worth of damage; 1 foot of water in a 2,500 square-foot single-story home can cause more than $29,000 in damage.

The National Hurricane Program (NHP) provides data, resources and technical assistance for hurricane evacuation planning and response for state, local, tribal, territorial and federal government partners. The National Hurricane Program is a partnership between FEMA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the NOAA National Hurricane Center.

Here are some simple steps from FEMA you can take to prepare yourself and your family. For complete list visit FEMA's official website.

Know your Evacuation Route

Check with local officials about what shelter spaces are available this year. Don’t forget, coronavirus may have altered your community’s plans.

Gather Supplies

Have enough food, water and other supplies for every member of your family to last several days. Consider the unique needs of your family, such as supplies for pets or medication for seniors. Adding extra masks, soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes or general household cleaning supplies can help to protect you from COVID-19 when you evacuate to a shelter.

Make an Emergency Plan

Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands your hurricane plan. Don’t forget a plan for the office, daycare center, school and any other locations you frequent.

Plan with Disability in Mind

No two people are the same: each of us moves through, functions in and navigates the world differently. It is important to make your emergency plan based on what works best for you.

Creating a support network or planning ahead with accessible transportation can ensure that you stay safe when disaster strikes. Visit Ready.gov/disability for more information on how to plan if, for example, you are blind, hard of hearing or have sensory disabilities.

SERVPRO of Valdosta specializes in storm and flood damage restoration. Our crews are highly trained and we use specialized equipment to restore your property to its pre-storm condition.

Some Guidance On What To Do After The Fire

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

The Valdosta community on average is affected by 400 fires each year. Of these fires, almost half of them occurred in people's homes or places of business.

When a fire occurs, it can be a devastating experience. According to FEMA the building and many of the things in your home may have been badly damaged by flames, heat, smoke and water. You will find that things the fire did not burn up are now ruined by smoke and soggy with water used to put out the flames.

Anything that you want to save or reuse will need to be carefully cleaned. The firefighters may have cut holes in the walls of the building to look for any hidden flames. They may even have cut holes in the roof to let out the heat and smoke. Cleanup will take time and patience.

Commercial Fires In Valdosta

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

On average, US fire departments respond to a blaze in a building under construction or major renovation every hour and a half. This is according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Combine that with no shortage of ignition sources, ranging from heating and cooking equipment to welding and other hot-work activities, as well as the fact that fire protection systems like sprinklers may not yet be active. It can all add up to an environment primed for a devastating fire.

Every hour spent restoring your business back to pre-fire condition is an hour of lost revenue and productivity.

Valdosta Fire Department Has Some Fire Prevention Tips For You

6/17/2021 (Permalink)

The Valdosta Fire Department was recently reminding people to make an effort to prevent cooking fires. While they realize some people are tired of hearing about cooking fires, the Department is still seeing them in the Valdosta community.

Here are some tips they recently provided.

Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop.

Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/or carefully remove the pan from the burner.

Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.

Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need for frying or sautéing.

Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.

Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again.

Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water on the fire.

If the fire does not go out or you don’t feel comfortable sliding a lid over the pan, get everyone out of your home. Call the fire department from outside.

If you do have fire damage in your home or business, you will want to arrange for the experts at SERVPRO of Valdosta to respond after the fire.

House Fire Damage In Valdosta

5/21/2021 (Permalink)

If you live in Valdosta there is some good news regarding public safety and your home. The Valdosta Fire Department is fortunate to have an ISO Class 1 rating, the highest in the nation, and is responsible for providing Fire, Rescue, EMS and Haz-Mat services. If you do have a fire in your home or business there are some things to consider after the fire.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor.

There are two different types of smoke, wet and dry.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Disaster Response Experts Are Warning Against Unqualified Contractors

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

Storm Damage In Valdosta Can Bring Out Fake Contractors, Stick With The Professionals At SERVPRO of Valdosta

After serious storms have passed there can be a new threat to be concerned about according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. They recently warned about attempts to scam residents can be made over the phone, by mail or email, through the internet or in person. It is important to remain alert. Con artists are creative and resourceful. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it should be questioned.

The demand for contractors to repair or replace damaged homes after a storm is high. Unqualified contractors may try to take advantage of the situation to scam homeowners. As insurance settlements, grants and loans put homeowners in a position to pay for work on their homes, they need to be sure the people they hire are authorized to do the work, will complete it and will do the work correctly.

FEMA Recommends looking out for these warning signs

Door-To -Door Solicitations

High Pressure Sales or Scare Tactics

Demand for Cash, Unusually Large Down

Payments or Advanced Full Payment

Special Deals or Extremely Low Bids

Verbal Agreements, No Written Contract

Out of State, No Permanent Place of Business, No Insurance

Inadequate References

The great bleach vs mold debate.

9/25/2019 (Permalink)

Customer Service Check mark. Youll be Mold OVER with our customer Service.

Contrary to popular belief bleach will not kill mold. In fact, as much as the infamous fragrance of bleach triggers us to think that it is clean and disinfected, bleach does not disinfect porous surfaces. Linoleum, wood, cloth or even drywall will not be disinfected by using bleach.

Using bleach actually can encourage mold to grow into a toxic mold because it's providing the mold with moisture needed to multiply and spread. When trying to eradicate the mold color, bleach is a good choice but will not inhibit the growth of mold.

We are proud to share that we choose family-friendly, kid-friendly and pet safe products for our customers when remediating mold. Compared to using bleach which is corrosive and has toxic fumes. Our products will not harm your home or your surfaces. Partner those agents with state of the art equipment to aid in the remediation as well as a highly trained staff and you have a win.   Choose SERVPRO of Valdosta and Know the job is done right.
